FAQ - ETHEREUM - difference between a transaction and a contract + Bitstamp warning !

ETHEREUM HAS TWO METHODS OF SENDING FUNDS:

Normal Transaction: A piece of data, signed by an External Actor. It represents either a Message or a new Autonomous Object. Transactions are recorded into each block of the blockchain.

This means that a transaction represents either a Message or a new contract.

Internal transaction (message): Data (as a set of bytes) and Value (specified as Ether) that is passed between two Accounts, either through the deterministic operation of an Autonomous Object or the cryptographically secure signature of the Transaction

This means that an internal transaction is the data and amount of Ether that is passed between two accounts. An internal transaction is created by contracts interacting with each other, or by a transaction.

A contract is only capable of sending an internal transaction.

Cryptopia cannot receive internal transactions.

https://i.imgur.com/nK2SV26.jpg

The Cryptopia Ethereum deposit address is only capable of receiving normal transactions. DO NOT SEND funds from a smart contract. The exchange software that interacts with the wallet address will not pick up internal transactions.

WARNING: Some exchanges send Ethereum funds from a smart contract (internal transaction) - it will not be credited to your Cryptopia account. There is no guarantee that it is recoverable or specific recovery timeframe. A recovery charge may apply.

It is recommended that if you are unsure of how an exchange sends the funds that you send it to a personal (e.g. MEW ) wallet first and then send it to your Cryptopia account.

This way you will be certain that it is sent as a normal transaction.

Bitstamp is one of the exchanges that uses contracts (internal transactions) to send. Do not send directly from Bitstamp to here.

. Bitstamp,  . Coinmama,  . Lykke (incomplete list)

Are not supported. These send ETH as a contract and not as a normal transaction.

Cryptopia is just one of the many exchanges that do not support contract payments from Bitstamp.

Other Exchanges that don't accept smart contracts:

Bittrex, Bitfinex, Coinexchange.io, Coinhako, Coinpayments, Cryptopia, Exodus, Koinex, Ledger, Liqui, SimplexFX (incomplete list)

Some of these exchanges will not recover a contract payment.

To recover from Cryptopia you need to make a support ticket and wait 2 weeks. A recovery fee may apply.

Thanks for posting. I used Binance to transfer Ethereum to  my Cryptopia account. Do you have any idea if they use a Contract-type transfer for that? Because I never received it.

Here is the wallet address you gave me for the ETH deposit with proof of 0.29 balance: https://etherscan.io/address/0xb40761b67c6d25d6806054ae405642237b650555 Transaction details and confirmation: https://etherscan.io/tx/0x3f5c01baf8562e71efb8f7221c9e181c533bba6cbbdaa70191e6f7e802ca0257

I did send 0.31 Ether form Bitstamp to my ETH wallet her on cryptopia and they used internal transactions.

I haven't receive my 0.31ETH on my wallet here! But if you check etherscan, you can see that cryptopia took out 0.69 Ether(0.31ETH form Bitstamp and 0.37ETH form Coinbase) form my wallet a few days ago.....

This is the proof that they definitely did receive my Ethereum but amount is not credited!

This is to add to the comment above. You should have been more clear what you meant by "contract" when warning people about depositing Etherium.

Here is my Etherscan address because i forgot to paste it in above comment. please credit my account with Etherium coins.

There is where the confusion is - the deposit address is not YOUR wallet - it is a deposit address that interacts with the Cryptopia API to credit your funds to your account. The funds are credited to the Cryptopia wallet.

The API does not recognise internal transactions and that is why there is a BIG WARNING on the wallet not to send it as an internal transaction using a contract.

Hello there. I made a topic asking about this but nobody's answered so I'm gonna ask here hoping someone from STAFF can notice it. It's not some sort of a BS or spam.

We all know there are some problems with Deposits right now but my question is :: Is that caused because of the -LOW FEES- ?

I've deposited some amount of ETH with the fee that Cryptopia has offered and still haven't received it. Then I've deposited 0.0001 ETH with two times higher fee and they've appeared in my wallet after a few hours. I know it works like that for BTC but is it so about every coin? If so, I think the low fee you provide for some deposits can screw things up. Most people won't know what's that fee actually for and just keep up with the normal fee this exchange offers when they Deposit. Then their amount of whatever probably gets delayed or stuck somewhere on the network and problems begin. If that's the real problem what can we do about it? Will it get pushed through with a low fee? I mean, it's the fee you've put so you should be prepared for this kind of things.

Thank you for your time.

The only way to get help from Cryptopia for the problem that you created is to make a support ticket detailing the issue. https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/UserSupport

These forums are for information only - not for support - https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/Forum/Thread/3995

Same here. Lost 1ETH in Bitstamp to Crytptopia transaction.

I'm not going to link transaction hash because we all have the same problem and responsible ones frome Cryptopia are aware of that. I've issued a support ticket with full detail (and waiting for response for over 2 weeks).

What I would like is to appeal to Cryptopia staff to deal with it in responsible and timely manner. All of us which have sent you ETH through contract didn't knew that Bitstamp (or some other exchanges) are executing their transactions with smart contracts and not directly. In my case I didn't even heard of transfering ETH through contracts before this unfortunate case (being new to all this crypto fuss). I assumed that transfer between two major exchanges would be piece of cake. I am really careful person and have done my share of reading and investigating before entering cryptosphere. But that warning on deposit page should be more elaborate so that there could be no place for mistaque. I mean, you should warn us that you can not receive ETH from some exchanges, and preferably name those.

I accept some shared responsibility. Cryptopia did put that poorly elaborated warning. But I think it's in Cryptopia's best interest to resolve this issue so that they don't gain more negative PR, because Cryptopia's reputation is not so good allready. Stealing few thousand bucks and loosing millions in volume isn't good business decision.

Cryptopia should at least release a notice about this matter and what are they doing about it.

Hope we will get our funds credited to our accounts and do some trading here in the future...

I think there is a lot of newbie confusion. When you are sending from an exchange you are not sending from your account address. You are actually sending from an exchange wallet and have no control about how it is sent. This is why as an experienced user I made this FAQ.

Cryptopia always attempts to recover funds if it is possible and not too costly to do so.

(Some cross chain recoveries are not possible or prohibitively expensive)

Unfortunately a lot of people make the same mistakes which leads to long customer support delays.

But your comments are helpful as well - I have updated the faq to include a warning not to send directly from bitstamp.

Unfortunately I didn't see this thead before I send all my eth to cryptopia. I understand that cryptopia is very busy, but Are my ETH lost or how does cryptopia consider whether it is worth rebuilding the transfer?

Thank you for your time.

The Bitstamp warning is a good idea. May also be worth checking all other main exchanges for the same issue and posting those warnings too.

On another matter, the lack or care and responsibility (and crypto education) of users of this exchange is shocking and to be honest most deserve to lose funds. Maybe worthwhile tightening up the Ts & Cs for protection and/or increasing the charges for support.

I agree, this is one area Cryptopia needs to be clear on. Users should be able to set gas levels if they want the comfort of a speedy transaction (if this is indeed the problem). I tansferred ETH to Bittrex in Dec (just as the cryptokitty crap started). Took a few days but eventually got there. It was a sizeable amount so would have been nice to set my own fees.

Cryptopia API has some issues with interfacing with the often overloaded Ethereum network. The Cryptopia developers don't particularly like Ethereum and reluctantly listed it due to user requests (including requests from myself - I am a fan of Ethereum). Even Vitalik Butterin admits that Ethereum is experimental, has serious scaling issues and is far from perfect.

The dislike of Ethereum is one of the reasons that there is no Ethereum basemarket on Cryptopia.

ERC20 token and Ethereum issues take up a disproportionately large amount of Support requests.

The increase in gas sounds like a good suggestion. (But no doubt a fee increase will be followed by complaints and accusations)
